"Sustainable, Social, Economic and Environmental Revitalization in the Historic Core of Multan City" aims to promote socioeconomic development and environmental protection in priority sectors such as livelihood improvement, education, and basic infrastructure in Multan City, PakistanThe project is funded through the Debt Swap Agreement between the Government of the Italian Republic and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

The project will concentrate on living conditions improvement in the historic core of Multan City and it will be implemented in two phases: the first phase over a period of 3 years (November 2011 - June 2014), the second one over a period of 2 years (December 2015 - September 2017).



PHASE 1 OF THE PROJECT


It focuses on fundamental issues such as: urban planning, traffic analysis, water supply system and sanitation, air quality monitoring, pollution and waste control, street paving, architectural interventions (especially for the preservation of ancient buildings), operational plans to start up a microcredit system, strategies to promote tourism and to strengthen the Italian-Pakistani entrepreneurial relationship. It was developed by Fondazione Politecnico di Milano, together with Politecnico di Milano. The Departments involved was numerous: Department of Architecture, Built Environment and Construction Engineering, whose commitment in many international projects is relevant; Department of Architecture and Urban StudiesDepartment of DesignDepartment of Civil and Environmental Engineering. More than 70 people worked on the team project (professors, researchers, and technical staff).

PHASE 2 OF THE PROJECT

The second phase of the project 'Sustainable, Social, Economic and Environmental Revitalization in the Historic Core of Multan City' aims to demonstrate and initiate a sustainable process of social and economic revitalization and upgrading of physical environment of livelihoods and living conditions of the residents in the historic core of Multan City, in Pakistan. The project concentrated on living conditions improvement in the historic core of Multan City and it implemented the second phase, after the first. The studies conducted in the first phase allowed Fondazione Politecnico di Milano to better understand the urban dynamics across the Walled City. The numerous surveys and practical projects outlined and delivered have constituted the basis for the working plans in these main areas: Haram Gate and Place, Musafir Khana and Sarafa Bazaar. The general goal is to improve the life quality of the inhabitants, encouraging the tourism and making the city more attractive for the placement of economic activities. The second phase of the project is developed by Fondazione Politecnico di Milano, together with Politecnico di Milano. The project involves three Departments of Politecnico di Milano: Department of Architecture, Built Environment and Construction EngineeringDepartment of Architecture and Urban Studies; Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. More than 30 people is working on the team project: professors, researchers, technical staff and locals.
